"The Invisible Man" is a science fiction novel by H.G. Wells, published in
1897. The novel tells the story of Griffin, a scientist who invents a way to
make himself invisible but fails to reverse the process. Griffin becomes a
practitioner of random and irresponsible violence, and his character has
become an iconic figure in horror fiction. The novel is written in the third-
person objective point of view and is considered influential in establishing
Wells as the "father of science fiction." The plot follows Griffin's arrival
in the English village of Iping, where he causes a lot of accidents and
becomes the talk of the town. When his landlady demands payment, he reveals
his invisibility to her and flees to the South Downs. Griffin coerces a tramp
to become his assistant and returns to the village to recover his notebooks.
He reveals his true identity to Dr. Kemp, a former acquaintance from medical
school, and describes his plan to use his invisibility to terrorize the
nation. Kemp denounces Griffin to the authorities, and Griffin fights his way
out of Kemp's house. He is eventually cornered, seized, and savagely beaten by
an enraged mob. The epilogue reveals that Marvel has secretly kept Griffin's
notes and has become a successful business owner, running the "Invisible Man
Inn.
